description
Note -- This wine was bottled in September, 2008, and will be ready to drink after Christmas, 2008.

The Majnoni Guicciardini Estate covers 200 hectares on the hills of the Elsa Valley, facing San Gemignano in Tuscany. The village of Vico d'Elsa sits along an ancient travel route between Rome and Northern Europe, and in medieval times the building that houses the company offices was originally a combination inn and hospital -- both a place for travelers to recover and to cure the sick. It was converted to a private residence in the 1500s, owned by a succession of Sienese and Florentine families. (Today, the main office building is a national historic landmark). The property was purchased by Francesco Guicciardini in 1870, and his daugher Marcella inherited the property in the early 20th century. She married Massimiliano Majnoni and created many of the facilities still in use at the Estate today. Pietro Majnoni, one of her grandsons, took over the business in 1985, and has managed the farming and wine production since 1992. Fattorie Majnoni Guicciardini produces not only grapes, but olives, grains, and other arable crops.

We're really excited to be making the foray into Italian wines and to be the first DC importer of two of Pietro's Chiantis. The Riserva is made from 85% Sangiovese and 15% Colorino, aged in oak. The Riserva has all of the fruit and spice of the Chianti with elegance and an even richer flavor. The Colorino grape is, as its name implies, intensely colored, so the wine has a depth of color that's really something to see. Try it with cheeses as an aperitif or with a rich, robust meal!
