Located in the Maremma region, Società Agricola Bulichella grows Shiraz, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Vermentino, and makes one white and four red wines. Bulichella is perched on a hill surrounding the medieval village of Suvereto, near the Tuscan coast of Italy. In the early 1980s, four families from northern Italy bought an existing farm and vineyard near Suvereto. In 1999, one of the co-owners, Hideyuki Miyakawa, bought out the others and decided to focus on wine production.
Hide Miyakawa came to wine production in a roundabout way. Born in Japan, he decided to ride his motorcycle with no particular destination in mind. He got to Italy, where he met and married Maria Luisa Bassano. They settled with their family in Turin, and Hide co-founded Italdesign, an automobile design company, with Giorgetto Giugiaro. When he retired, he and Marisa moved to Bulichella. In consultation with agronomist Gioanni Cerretelli and oenologist Luciano Bandini, they began to focus on sustainable farming and winemaking, along with Stefano Bonaguidi, the director of production. Stefano's son, Alessandro, is the sales manager. Shizuko and Sara Miyakawa, Hide and Marisa's daughters, manage the business side, including the agriturismo and restaurant on the property.
Bulichella's land spans over 15 hectares of vineyards, and the estate grows Shiraz, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Vermentino, making one white and four red wines. Bulichella's wines and olive oils are certified organic in Italy by the Istituto de Certificaziona Etica & Ambientale. While they are eligible to be labeled as "Made with Organic Grapes" here in the U.S., we will have the official paperwork for future vintages.
Tuscanio Bianco is one of the historic wines of Bulichella, and used to be made from both Vermentino and Trebbiano grapes, which is traditional for the region. However, they started formulating the wine with Vermentino alone in 2007. The decision was made because Vermentino alone is more representative of the land -- plus the family wanted to forge a different identity for their white wine than other producers in the area. The wine has intense aromas of pineapple and apricot, along with a little vanilla (although it's not aged in oak). It's crisp, with citrus and tropical fruits. A great, full-bodied white wine!
